A long trip included my first visits to Tehachapi, Barstow, and Cajon Pass, all places that are a long way from Milwaukee and that I had only read about until this day. Here are a few photos from Cajon Pass. If I ever visit again, I'll go in the morning, as many of these shots are backlit. Choose "three" columns to see all of the shots in this album on one page.
We were WB on Interstate 15 when we went over the summit and downhill. A curve to the left revealed three bridges over tracks, with the ex-Southern Pacific track first (referenced here as Track 3), followed by the middle track (#2) and the farthest track (#1). Downhill references are to BNSF westbounds heading towards San Bernadino (BNSF) or ports or UP eastbounds headed towards West Colton or the ports. Uphill references lead to Barstow (BNSF), Bakersfield (UP, ex-SP) or Salt Lake City (UP).
A BNSF Z train was creeping downhill on track 1, led by BNSF 5329. It stayed on track 1 and went on its way. Another BNSF train, a double stacker, creeped down the hill, paused for a couple of minutes near the bottom, then proceeded to cross over to track 1 to follow the previous train. A BNSF train, led by a warbonnet, was waiting on track 2 to go up the hill. After BNSF 5329 passed, it crossed over to track 1 and proceeded up the hill. In the meantime, BNSF 5400 was pulling a manifest downhill on track 2 and stopped on the grade. Shortly thereafter, UP 4791 creeped down the hill on track 3 pulling a Pacer stacktrain. It stopped on track 3 for a short time before proceeding onwards. Once it cleared, two WB trains charged up the hill on track three only a few minutes apart led by BNSF 948, then UP 7621. We had to move on, but BNSF 5400 was still sitting on the downgrade on track 2 when we left.
