Album Info:Starting in Winona, I drove west as far as Essig then back to Winona looking for trains and vestiges of the C&NW on a beautiful Saturday. I shot a pair of ICE engines resting at the end of former C&NW track at Goodview. The scanner was quiet as I traveled west up Stockton hill and onwards. Soo 4401 is now assigned to Rochester. West of Rochester at Dodge City, I was surprised to find no trains. This is the first location west of Goodview for through trains to meet. As I neared Owatonna, I heard a warrant issued to a westbound train to approach Waseca. DME 6071 was leading a long train that stopped outside Waseca. There was no room on the main in Waseca because another train was being assembled. A short eastbound led by CP 6018 approached the yard from the west. It had four red CP SD40-2 engines but only ten cars. It had a FRED, so I'm guessing it was a local that had ranged west. I heard a westbound get a warrant to pass a rail train at Lime Siding east of Mankato. On the north side of Mankato, where the DM&E runs for a few miles on the UP, a UP switch job blocked the junction for a few minutes. Then the westbound, which was a train of ethanol empties led by CP 5750, was given permission to run through town. I caught it rejoining home rails at the junction on the south side of Mankato. I waited for this train east of new Ulm and shot it on the Minnesota River bridge. The rail train followed it a few minutes later. Warrants were issued to each train in approx. 15 mile increments. I caught the 5750 west at Essig, then turned back east. A completed westbound was pulled west of Waseca to make room in the yard. I proceeded east on US 14. A westbound was heard on scanner, then was caught approaching Rochester. Finally, ICE 6453 and 6212 were ready to pull Winona-area traffic up Stockton Hill to Waseca as local train B27, so I chased it. It had 53 cars, including 19 loads. The engines hustled through Stockton, but were moving at only walking speed
